As a responsible puppy parent, you may think providing your puppy with their puppy vaccinations right away is in your puppy’s best interest. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. When puppies are very young, they’re protected from disease by drinking their mother’s first milk, called colostrum which contains maternal antibodies against infectious disease, which the mother passes down to her puppies.
Healthy puppies may not need any vaccinations and will likely maintain their antibodies (protections) for a lifetime. Early vaccination actually eliminates the natural immunity puppies have from their mothers. This also leaves the puppy susceptible to infections. This is why, at Lagotto Lady Kennels we do NOT vaccinate our pups prior to leaving — it would put them in danger during the stressful time of transition to a new home.
While not vaccinating may be surprising and uncomfortable to some people, we encourage you to research this topic, of course the answers on the web will be across the board depending on who is giving the information. Although we can’t legally tell you not to vaccinate, this is a “educated” choice for you to make.
Over the past decade, we have experimented with this theory and what we have found is our dogs, even as seniors, without any vaccinations, still have the Immune system passed down to them from the mom — has lasted a life time.
Should you decide to Vaccinate, we urge you to follow a very limited protocol such as Karen Becker, DVM (See below links).
Starting at 12 Weeks Parvovirus and Distemper Protocol
When your puppy is 12 weeks of age, get a parvovirus and distemper antibody titer test. Titer testing is an antibody blood test to determine a dog’s current protection from the infection testing. Antibody testing is a safe alternative to just vaccination because the calendar says so. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association suggests that “testing for antibody status (for either puppies or adult dogs) should be better practice than simply administering a vaccine booster.” (American Veterinary Medical Foundation.)
20 Weeks Rabies
The rabies vaccination is required by law in almost all states. When your veterinarian gives your puppy his rabies vaccination, please ensure that it is given at least four weeks from other vaccinations. The safest vaccine on the market, Merial IMRAB which is thimerosal-free. After your dog’s first year this only needs to be given every 3 years. There are serious noted side effects of the rabies vaccination such as behavior changes, obsessive behavior, seizures, autoimmune diseases and atrophy. Just like you can titer your puppy’s antibodies for his distemper and parvo, you can also titer his rabies. (Rabies Challenge Fund)
Thimerosal In Rabies Vaccines
Ask your vet if they can order a “thimerosal-free” rabies vaccine. Most vets do not have this on hand, and you will need to “pre-order” or make some calls to see if you can find a vet that will do this for you. This is very important and don’t let the vet tell you differently. If you are vaccinating your dog for rabies, make sure you see the label of the vaccine and that the vaccine is thimerosal free. The safest rabies vaccination we have found to be IMRAB which is thimerosal-free. I’m not sure why more vets do not use this, perhaps because it costs more?

If you choose to vaccinate, we highly suggest administering a product called “Adored Beast’s Anti-Vaccinosis” or also called “rebalance”. This assists in the removal of associated vaccine side effects without removing any vaccine benefits and helps clear out the ill effects of over-vaccination.
Year One and Beyond
As for your dog’s vaccination schedule, less is usually more. Please don’t just vaccinate. If you feel your dog needs to be immune to a specific disease, titer first. You may be pleasant surprised that your healthy dog stays healthy and immune throughout his life. If you do decide to re-vaccinate, please remember one vaccination at a time and use the Adored Beast’s Anti-Vaccinosis remedy.
